A two-three day wood supply should be kept indoors. Wood brought in from outdoors in winter and burned immediately will cool the fire and prevent proper combustion. Proper firewood storage protects the wood (and your home) from termites, ants and other pests. Store your firewood in an area that receives sun & wind, least ten feet from the house. Keep logs at least 6 inches off the ground to allow for plenty of ventilation necessary for even drying & to avoid insect infestation. Even putting down some long PVC or metal pipe for the wood to sit on, helps. If logs are split, store wood with the bark side up to help shed rain. A tarp can be used when long periods of heavy rain are forecast. Otherwise, keep the woodpile uncovered to allow moisture to evaporate. Trapped moisture will create mold, fungus, bug & decay problems.
